Batman: Arkham Knight is the fourth video game released in the Batman: Arkham series. It is a sequel to Batman: Arkham City and follows Batman as he takes back Gotham City from the Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight.
Plot
Nine months after the Joker's body was cremated, Gotham's crime rate seems to have dropped, before Scarecrow decides to test his fear toxin on Pauli's Diner, threatening almost the entire city into evacuating, causing the population to now be few, including supervillains, thugs, and the GCPD.
Batman answers Gordon's call, and he tells him that there has been an unknown military vehicle speeding through Chinatown, being the only lead they have had all night, Batman gives him a device so he can communicate with him for the rest of the night, and Gordon receives a call that a patrol car has went missing, trying to talk to Batman before realizing he has disappeared again.
Batman goes to rescue the missing police officer, before the military vehicle shows up and almost runs them over. Batman summons the Batmobile, and tracks down the military vehicle, a police car joins the chase but is blown up by one of the soldiers. Having stopped the vehicle, Batman interrogates the soldier and asks him where Scarecrow is, before the soldier tries to attack him and Batman takes it, after threatening him, the soldier says he's in a penthouse in Chinatown, and he breaks his arm. Batman heads to the said penthouse, and finds Poison Ivy being held captive and rescues her, he finds out about Scarecrow's plan to defeat him, he takes her outside the penthouse before being ambushed by the militia, and Batman summons the Batmobile and takes out the tanks, also taking out the other tanks that were deployed at Panessa Studios.
Poison Ivy is locked up inside GCPD, and Batman heads to the Clock Tower to scan the fear toxin sample from the soldier that he took. Barbara Gordon joins him and they help track where the fear toxin is being made. Batman heads to Panessa Studios and reactivates the antenna, and goes to Falcone's Shipping Yard but runs into militia soldiers, where they have a GCPD officer hostage. He manages to take down two soldiers by luring them outside, but there are still three, so he asks Lucius Fox to deliver the new batsuit and suits up, making him able to take down the enemies quickly.
Batman repurposes the antenna to the Batcomputer to track the fear toxin, and find out that it is being made in ACE Chemicals, he tells Gordon about the location and meet up there, before an helicopter attacks them and blows up the bridge leading to ACE Chemicals, Batman later heads to investigate and finds out that the helicopter's pilot was the Arkham Knight. Batman tracks down the ACE Chemicals workers that are still in the building and rescues them, then enters the mixing chamber and almost stops Scarecrow before he mentions Barbara Gordon and Batman finds out she's being kidnapped. Scarecrow locks Batman in the mixing chamber and he tries to reduce the blast radius, before an hallucination of Joker knocks him out unconscious.
Cutting back to the past, Gordon enters Panessa Studios and finds out about the Joker infected, Batman tells him that before Joker died, he had sent his blood across the state's hospitals, and the infected were the cause of hospital errors and unrecorded transfusions. This affected five people that went untreated and caused them to become Joker. Gordon notices that Batman mentioned five people but there's only four, he says that "he'll be here soon".
Back in the present, Batman wakes up and escapes from ACE Chemicals, informing Alfred that he managed to stop the blast radius, the transmission cuts to Joker briefly and cuts back to Alfred saying that Gordon wants to contact him. Batman goes to GCPD to meet up with Gordon, saying that he needs to speak to him and to meet him outside Prisoner Detention. As he arrives there, Batman informs Gordon that Barbara's been kidnapped by Scarecrow, and Batman escorts him out of the GCPD, being surprised by two militia vehicles but Batman takes them down, he tells Gordon that it's too dangerous and tells him to get in the Batmobile.
They go to the Clock Tower, and Batman hallucinates Barbara being crippled by Joker, resembling the events of The Killing Joke, as Gordon gets in the Clock Tower, he blames himself for Barbara's kidnapping and Batman reveals that she has been working with her. Seeing this, Gordon blames Batman for her kidnapping and punches him in the face, saying that she's all he's got left and leaving Batman for himself.
Batman gets the CCTV footage, and finds the footage of Barbara being kidnapped by the Arkham Knight, he finds the exact tire trail and follows it up until Miagani Island, where he asks Alfred to raise the bridges, but seeing as they're locked out, Batman heads to do it himself and takes down the militia guarding the bridge's controls. After he reenables the bridge controls, he hears the Riddler's broadcast and he reveals that he's captured Catwoman and has her inside the orphanage, Batman heads to rescue Catwoman but she cannot get out as she has an explosive collar that will detonate if she tries to escape.
Alfred regains the bridge's controls, and Batman resumes the vehicle's tire trail, leading to a crash site where the driver is found dead, and Batman finds out that Barbara caused the crash on purpose to leave a memory card that helped track down the Arkham Knight. Batman heads to Wayne Tower to scan the contents and finds where the militia is based in, and gets ambushed by the Arkham Knight and shot in the abdomen, quickly curing himself. Batman tracks down an APC with the Arkham Knight, but finds out after taking it down that it was a soldier with a voice synthesizer mimicking him, Batman interrogates him with the Batmobile and finds out that the Arkham Knight has gone to see the Penguin, where he tells him about North Refrigeration.
Batman informs Alfred of this, and tells that Nightwing is on his way to Gotham to help with North Refrigeration. When they meet up, they find a North Refrigeration van in the process of dealing weapons, and Batman tracks it down all the way to Penguin's cache to interrogate him, where he finds out about Simon Stagg and his airships, and is interrupted by his henchmen, Nightwing comes to help out Batman take down the thugs.
Batman blows up the cache and glides to Founder's Island to get to Stagg Airships, and finds out that it's been hooked and takes down the militia on a watchtower. He gains access to the airships and finds Stagg being interrogated by the militia, he takes them down and asks what happened before being interrupted by Joker, causing him to lose Stagg and having to get to the other airship. After taking down the other airship's turrets and infiltrating it, Batman finds out that Stagg was working with Scarecrow on a project named "Cloudburst", Batman tries to interrogate Stagg after saving him from the militia again, but he is interrupted once again by the fear toxin, knocking Stagg out unconscious. Batman heads to stop Scarecrow but is gassed with fear toxin, which briefly turns him into Joker and makes him more dangerous, nearly killing a few militia soldiers. After the effects wear off, Scarecrow escapes with the Cloudburst and Batman is knocked out unconscious by the Arkham Knight with a rocket launcher.
Batman wakes up and finds out via a Scarecrow broadcast that Barbara is being held in the penthouse in Chinatown. Heading there, Batman sees her get gassed and she shoots him through the glass before killing herself. Batman falls to his knees at the scene and tells Alfred that she's gone, and that Scarecrow was punishing him. Batman goes to GCPD to free Poison Ivy as he remembers the fear toxin doesn't affect her, and takes her to the Botanical Gardens, being interrupted by Cobra tanks, he helps Ivy out by freeing a plant meant to stop the Cloudburst.
Batman heads to Panessa Studios to track down the Cloudburst, but in failure to do so, he finds a way to lower the bridges in Founder's Island, Robin tells him that he still hasn't heard from Barbara, and Batman lies to him that she's fine. Batman heads to Founder's Island to get the relay chip to disable the drones' vision, and uses this to take down the two radar towers. After taking them out, he heads to lower the bridges and get the Batmobile inside, but is ambushed by the militia and quickly hides, having a brief encounter with the Arkham Knight. He lowers the Python drone's defense shield and takes it down with the Batmobile, now giving him full control of Gotham.
Batman heads to the Clock Tower to analyze the Batwing's tracking of the Cloudburst, but is met with an emergency call coming from the movie studios from Henry Adams, he informs that they're under attack and Robin is in trouble, before being knocked out by Harley Quinn. Batman quickly heads to the movie studios, takes down the thugs outside it and helps out Robin, locking down the studio and tracking down the infected. First with Christina Bell, and then Johnny Charisma or Albert King depending on the player's choice. As Batman captures the infected, he experiences hallucinations involving Jason Todd's torture and Joker, almost mentioning him when Robin asks him if he's fine. After capturing the infected and Harley, Batman finds one of them dead, and discovers that Henry was infected all along and he was hiding it. Henry Adams then kills another Joker-infected, and then himself after finding out Batman is one of them. Robin says that Batman needs to get in the cell as there is no other choice, but Batman locks him up instead and exits the Movie Studios.
Alfred contacts Batman and informs him of unusual seismic activity on Miagani Island. Near the Botanical Gardens, Batman realizes Ivy has revealed her location to the Arkham Knight. After fending off the Arkham Knight's Drone forces, Batman goes to collect Ivy and take her back to the GCPD. The Arkham Knight activates the Cloudburst, flooding all of Central Gotham with Fear Toxin and burning out the Batmobile's power core. Batman heads to Simon Stagg's Airships, finding Stagg and collecting a Nimbus power cell to fix the Batmobile. Batman goes below the toxin to fix the Batmobile, being exposed to another large dose. However, Batman can't track the Cloudburst because Ivy's plants can't clear enough of the toxin. Ivy tells him of another plant which she can use to help purify Gotham. Batman is able to free the plant and tracks the Cloudburst to Bleake Island. Batman raises the bridges on Founders Island and destroys the Arkham Knight's Cloudburst Tank, but the Arkham Knight manages to escape. Returning to Ivy, she manages to purify Gotham of Fear Toxin, dying in the process.
Batman returns to the GCPD and decodes a message left on a SWAT channel by Gordon. Using the ID number of radio Gordon's using, Batman tracks him to Killinger's Department Store. Descending into the mall, Batman goes underground in the Batmobile. The Arkham Knight returns, chasing Batman in an excavator. Batman is cornered by the Arkham Knight, who reveals he knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman. Batman ejects from the Batmobile as the excavator crushes the car. Batman proceeds further into the mall, finding Gordon. The Arkham Knight wasn't far behind, and holds Batman at gunpoint. The Arkham Knight reveals himself to be Jason Todd, the second Robin. Captured by the Joker, Jason Todd was tortured for over a year before being shot on a video sent to Batman. Batman believed him to be dead, but Jason believes Batman abandoned him deliberately. The two clash, with Batman coming out on top. However, when Batman turns his head to relay to Alfred that Jason is alive, Jason disappears.
Rescuing Gordon, the pair head to the roof to capture Scarecrow. On the roof, Gordon betrays Batman. Gordon made a deal with Scarecrow. In exchange for Batman, Scarecrow would give Gordon his daughter back. Scarecrow reveals that Barbara Gordon is alive, her suicide being a hallucination. Gordon deliberately shoots Batman in the heavily armored chest, knocking Batman off the roof. In response, Scarecrow pushes Barbara off the roof in retaliation for Gordon's actions. Batman saves Oracle from the fall and receives a summons a spare Batmobile. Oracle is taken to the GCPD, where she discovers that the Arkham Knight's Militia, now working for Scarecrow, is destroying the Clock Tower's computer network. Batman takes out the Militia at the Clock Tower and returns to the GCPD. The remainder of the Militia is sent to the GCPD for one final all-out attack, but it's foiled by Batman with Oracle's help. Oracle notifies Batman that Gordon's voice was used to gain access to Panessa Studios, where Robin is. Batman discovers that Robin has been kidnapped by Scarecrow. Scarecrow makes his final ultimatum: If Batman doesn't surrender himself to Scarecrow, Scarecrow will murder Robin and Commissioner Gordon.
Batman surrenders to Scarecrow, who takes him to the now-abandoned ruins of Arkham Asylum. Scarecrow brings Batman to the Arkham Mansion, where Gordon and Robin are being held. Scarecrow shoots Robin, and tells Gordon that if he doesn't remove Batman's cowl, he will kill Robin. On live television, Gordon removes Batman's cowl, revealing to the world that Bruce Wayne is Batman. Scarecrow injects Batman with a dose of Fear Toxin, giving the Joker control over Batman body. Joker taunts Scarecrow, unafraid of him. In retaliation, Scarecrow injects Joker with another dose. Within Batman's mind, Joker is haunted by Batman using his greatest fear. Batman defeats Joker and seals him away in his mind, making Joker's fear of being forgotten a reality.
As Scarecrow gloats, he injects Batman again. This time, the Fear Toxin does nothing. Batman is not afraid. Scarecrow attempts to kill Batman, but Jason Todd, now Red Hood, shoots the gun Scarecrow is holding and Batman's restraints. Batman grabs Scarecrow and injects him with his own toxin. Scarecrow screams in fear of Batman and is knocked out by Gordon. Batman asks Gordon to look after his family and leaves to take Scarecrow to the GCPD.
On the GCPD rooftop, Batman asks Alfred to prepare the Knightfall Protocol, confirming it with the passcode "Martha." At the Bat-Signal, Batman takes off his cowl and looks over Gotham. Batman calls Gordon to tell him that Gotham is safe and says goodbye. As Batman grapples to the Batwing, the Bat-Signal self-destructs. Gordon sends the GCPD out into Gotham to restore order now that the supervillain threats are defeated. As the press watches, Batman lands the Batwing on the lawn of Wayne Manor. As soon as Batman walks inside the Manor, the building explodes, crumbling into pieces as the press watches.
Some time later, James Gordon has become the new Mayor. On his way to Tim Drake and Barbara Gordon's wedding, Gordon asks what will happen now that the Batman is dead. A wealthy couple and their son walk through an alley, shadowed by a pair of muggers. The mugger knocks out the man, while the woman's pearl necklace is ripped off. The muggers spot a figure who looks like Batman on a nearby rooftop, but are unafraid. The real Batman is dead, they say. The figure grows taller and taller, flying towards the men in a demonic form as they scream in terror.

Creature of the Night - Man-Bat
While gliding through Gotham, Man-Bat can either jumpscare Batman as they grapple onto a building or fly around Gotham if he is not triggered.
After taking Man-Bat’s blood sample the first time, Batman goes to Kirk Langstrom’s lab, where video footage of him transforming into Man-Bat is on the TV, as well as the dead body of his wife, Francine Langstrom. Inside the lab, he develops a cure for Kirk’s mutation.
Batman manages to inject the cure into Man-Bat as he flies through Bleake Island, but it wasn’t enough. As he flies through Founders’ Island, Batman once again intercepts him and injects the cure, informing Cash that he’s taking him to GCPD, as he drives there, he can be heard hitting the Batmobile.
When Batman arrives to GCPD, he finds a now cured, and naked Kirk Langstrom that he takes to the isolation chamber in GCPD. Kirk regains consciousness, and immediately asks where Francine is, Batman tells him that she’s dead, and he breaks as he regrets the transformation.
If the system’s date is set to October 31st, Man-Bat can jumpscare Batman after you’ve completed the side mission, if you visit the GCPD after this, you’ll see the isolation chamber shattered and the cops can comment on it.[1]
Heir to the Cowl - Azrael
When Alfred informs of reports of burning bat-symbols, Batman heads to investigate and finds Azrael, having previously met nine months ago in Arkham City. Azrael gives him his sword, and Batman puts combat challenges for Azrael to complete without getting hit. After every challenge, Batman congratulates Azrael for passing it.
After completing the final one, Batman informs that he has completed the test, but he’ll be up to decide whether he is worth taking the mantle of the Dark Knight or not. Azrael, angry at his, says that there is no decision to make, but Batman replies by saying “he decides how it works, not him”. After Azrael leaves, Alfred informs Batman that he found out that Azrael’s real identity is Michael Lane, and that he used to be a police officer before being discharged due to mental disorders.
Batman heads to the Clock Tower, and Alfred sends him the neural data for Michael Lane, informing him that there is something that doesn’t belong there, Batman finds out that it is a chip implanted into Azrael’s brain, with further analysis, he finds out that the Order of St. Dumas brainwashed him into taking up the mantle for the Batman and killing him, Alfred asks Batman how will he stop him, but Azrael suddenly interrupts saying he won’t, Batman replies with his real name, but Azrael says that he is dead and that he is now Azrael, Batman says “the Order has lied to you, stolen his free will”, Azrael calls him a liar and tells him that “he stands in the way of true justice”, Batman finishes with “in that case, the choice is yours”.
By this point, the player has control of Azrael and can make three decisions:
- Kill Batman: Grabbing the sword and choosing to kill Batman will result in Batman dodging the attack and knocking Azrael out, taking him to GCPD where he locks him up. Azrael can later be talked to when visiting the GCPD for dialogue.
- Break the Sword: After grabbing the sword, Azrael breaks the sword in half and leaves the Clock Tower, Batman says that he made the right decision, and Azrael replies by saying that the order will pay for what they have done to him.
- Leave: It is the same ending as above, but with the difference that the sword remains intact.
Gotham on Fire - Firefly
Alfred informs Batman about reports of a fire station burning, and Batman heads over to extinguish the fire with the Batmobile. As the fire dissipates, Firefly emerges and Batman chases him with the Batmobile, ending with attacking him before he escapes again. He does this again in Bleake Island’s fire station, but is captured after burning Founders’ Island fire station and locked up in GCPD.
Armored and Dangerous - Militia APCs
Batman has to chase nine militia APCs, three each patrolling the three islands one at a time. When Batman has taken down half of the APCs, they will be armored with double rocket launchers and have more reinforcements each time.
Gunrunner - Penguin
After Nightwing arrives in Gotham and helps Batman interrogate Penguin for information on Barbara Gordon and the Arkham Knight, he stays in Gotham to help track down other North Refrigeration vans.
After tracking down the last van, Nightwing is captured by the Penguin as he is held up in an Otisburg building. After they take down Penguin’s thugs and plant Explosive Gel on the last cache, Penguin sneaks up on Nightwing and holds him at gunpoint, but Nightwing distracts him by talking about the Flying Grayson and Batman tackles Penguin down, he blows up the cache and knocks him unconscious.
As Batman takes Penguin to the GCPD, Penguin wakes up and asks to Batman “where is he”, Batman replies with “guess”, Penguin screams in denial and says to Batman that “those guns were his”, Batman replies that “he can sell them for scrap, if he ever gets out”, Penguin replies that “he is nothing without is little helpers and that he nearly had his boy”, but Batman stays silent, and Penguin asks if he "got him rattled", but Batman suddenly asks if he wants “GCPD or the morgue”, Penguin says that it is an empty threat and “we all knows he doesn’t kill”, but Batman replies by saying that “he’s not feeling himself tonight”, Penguin, intimidated, replies that "he'll feel better tomorrow and good nights kip and do wonders".
If the side mission was done after the main story, however,
Depending on if Two-Faced Bandit or Gunrunner were finished first, Penguin can have unique dialogue with Two-Face about how including him in the plan was a big mistake.
Occupy Gotham - Militia Watchtowers
The militia take control of the skies, which is Batman’s main form of transportation, and he will have to takedown these watchtowers to regain control of Gotham’s skies.
The watchtowers are a requirement to unlock Deathstroke’s boss fight.
Own the Roads - Militia Checkpoints
The militia have also taken control of the roads, to which Batman has to take them down to regain control of Gotham’s streets.
The checkpoints are a requirement to unlock Deathstroke's boss fight.
Two-Faced Bandit - Two-Face
After Batman leaves Ivy in the Botanical Gardens, Alfred informs to him that there's a robbery in the progress in the Chinatown Bank of Gotham, surveillance footage confirming it is Two-Face's crew[2]. Batman heads there and takes them down to prevent them from stealing more money, and does it again with the Drescher Bank and Kingston Bank, and in this last one, Two-Face goes there himself with some militia soldiers to help him take down Batman, but fails to do so.
As Batman takes Two-Face to GCPD, Two-Face yells at Batman about how they would've saved Gotham and how it was Batman who put the "acid-throwing bastard" in the dock.[3]
If the mission was completed after the main story, the dialogue is different, and Batman doesn't talk the whole time. Two-Face denies to accept he's Bruce Wayne, saying he's not him, and that him and Gordon didn't strike a deal with Bruce Wayne, and it is not him going on rooftops every night.[4]
Friend in Need - The Identity Thief
While informing Batman of seismic activity in Miagani Island, Alfred also informs that he has not been able to contact Lucius Fox, and tells Batman to head there to investigate. As Batman enters the elevator, he watches the camera footage of Hush, impersonating Bruce Wayne, entering his office and using Lucius’s eye scan to transfer funds. As Batman exits the elevator, he sees Lucius being held at gunpoint by Hush, and that he’s finally glad for Batman to have arrived, Batman informs to Alfred that they have an intruder and it is Thomas Elliot, the identity thief.
Batman enters the office and tells Hush to let Lucius go, but Hush asks for him to bring Bruce Wayne or he kills Lucius, so after trying to convince him, Batman unmasks in front of him and catches him off-guard, he attempts to shoot him but Bruce quickly reacts and smashes him into the table, Lucius tells Batman that he thought he secured the tower, and Batman reassures that it is not his fault, and tells him to lock him in the building as he cannot take him to GCPD. If the story was completed, Batman assumes that Lucius did not see the news and later says goodbye to him.[5]
Lamb to the Slaughter - Deacon Blackfire
This mission can be unlocked in two ways, the first is going to the interview room after rescuing Oracle and playing the tape, which will unlock the side mission, the second is after taking down the militia in the Clock Tower, Oracle will Batman that Jack Ryder went to the Lady of Gotham after Cash tried to stop him and shouted over freedom of press.[6]
Jack Ryder is captured by Deacon Blackfire while he was investigating him for some time, and was about to be sacrificed at the Lady of Gotham before Batman intervened and stopped Deacon.

As of December 15, 2023, the files for this skin are in the Steam version of the game, but hidden away, this can be fixed by just drag and dropping the 368100 folder in Batman Arkham Knight\DLC to another one of the numbered folders.

It would later receive a bug fix on January 23, 2024, because it did not cast a shadow at all.[9]

Platforms & Editions
Batman: Arkham Knight would release initially on June 23, 2015 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the Windows version also being released, but being pulled from stores[11] and released four months later on October[12]. Batman: Arkham Knight is playable via backwards compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, although there are no significant visual or performance changes.
Batman: Arkham Knight - Premium Edition released alongside the base game and includes the game and the Season Pass, meaning it also has every downloadable content released for the game.
There was a cancelled Batmobile Edition that would have been released for $200 USD alongside the game[13], but it was cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances that greatly compromised the quality of this extremely limited run of product." This cancelled edition would've included a steelbook case containing the game disc, a fully transformable Batmobile statue, a limited edition comic book, an artbook showcasing the concept art of the game, and The New 52 skin pack that later released free with the game.[14]
Batman: Arkham Knight would later be released for Nintendo Switch as part of the Batman: Arkham Trilogy bundle developed by Turn Me Up Games on December 1, 2023[15]. It would include every downloadable content, including the PlayStation 4 exclusive ones. This version is infamous for its poor performance and visuals, having constant stutters in the open world and Batmobile traversal, as well as its constant crashes and even softlocks[16]. Fortunately, the performance isn't much of a problem by playing via backwards compatibility on Nintendo Switch 2, as WB Games has officially released patches for the console on late 2025[17][18], but it still has the poor visuals.

Trivia
- The Season Pass was originally priced at $40 USD at launch with Batman: Arkham Knight being $60 USD, making it $100 USD or $90 USD for Premium Edition if you wanted to get the full experience back in 2015. As of 2017 (and 2016 for Season Pass), this price has gone down to just $40 USD for both, and as low as $6 USD on sale.[19][20][21]
- Heir to the Cowl and Shadow War are the only side missions that give the player a choice to affect what happens in the end.
