Batman

From Batman: Arkham Wiki

"I am vengeance, I am the night, I am Batman!"

―Batman, Batman: Arkham Knight

Bruce Wayne, better known as Batman, is a vigilante operating in Gotham City and the primary protagonist of the Batman: Arkham series.

Biography

Early life

Bruce Wayne was born into the wealthy Wayne family and was the son of Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne. One day, when Bruce Wayne was eight years old[1], his parents were gunned down in front of him by Joe Chill, leaving him traumatized for life and later on becoming the vigilante Batman.

Before the Batman

To become the fear of Gotham's criminals Bruce Wayne needed to acquire a very particular set of skills. To learn those skills he traveled the world and trained all around the globe. The last stop was in Korea, where he trained under Master Kirigi and proved himself capable in a fight against Lady Shiva.

Early career as Batman

Batman: Arkham Origins

On Christmas Eve, Batman entered Blackgate Prison during a prison breakout led by Black Mask. There he investigated the murder of Commissioner Loeb and encountered Killer Croc. After defeating Croc, Batman learned that Black Mask had placed a bounty on him and that eight assassins had come to Gotham to collect it.[2]

Batman began investigating the assassins and Black Mask's criminal operation. His search eventually brought him to a murder scene at Lacey Towers, where he reconstructed the events surrounding the deaths inside the apartment.[3]

The investigation ultimately revealed that Joker had taken control of Black Mask's operation and had been impersonating him. Batman subsequently pursued Joker to the Royal Hotel, where several of the assassins had gathered.[4]

At the Royal Hotel, Batman encountered Bane, who proved to be one of the most dangerous assassins pursuing him. During the confrontation, Batman saved Joker from falling to his death despite Joker's expectation that Batman would allow him to die.[5]

Bane later discovered Batman's identity as Bruce Wayne and attacked the Batcave. Alfred Pennyworth was critically injured during the attack, but Batman was able to revive him.[6]

Batman eventually returned to Blackgate during another prison uprising orchestrated by Joker. Joker attempted to force Batman into violating his refusal to kill, while Batman again fought Bane and ultimately defeated him. Batman then confronted Joker and refused to kill him despite Joker's attempts to provoke him into doing so.[7]

The events at Blackgate also changed Batman's relationship with James Gordon. Although Gordon had previously regarded Batman as a criminal vigilante, Batman's actions during the crisis began establishing the cooperation between them that would develop later in the series.[8]

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate

Three months after the events of Batman: Arkham Origins (2013), Batman encounters Catwoman for the first time, after she stole a thumbdrive with data. Batman follows her through Gotham and finally catches her, although he could not prevent Catwoman from sending the data she stole to her employer. When the GCPD showed up, Batman fled the scene and left Catwoman to be arrested.

Two weeks later an explosion occurs at Blackgate. Batman enters the prison to investigate, where he meets Catwoman again. She tells him that Black Mask, the Penguin and the Joker each took control of one section of the prison. After Catwoman tells Batman about hostages that are held in the Arkham Ward, they form a fragile alliance. While Batman fights his way through Blackgate, Catwoman supports him over the comms.

Over the course of the night Batman takes down the likes of Bronze Tiger, Deadshot, Solomon Grundy, Black Mask, the Penguin and the Joker, before finally entering the Arkham Ward to save the hostages. Inside the Arkham Ward he finds Bane, drained of Venom, instead of the hostages. Catwoman had tricked him into opening Arkham Ward for her. Her plan was to get inside Blackgate all along, to abduct Bane for her employer.

To ensure Batman would not stop her, Catwoman has placed five bombs/hostages/rigged junction boxes (depending on which villain the player takes down last) across the prison. Batman lets Catwoman leave so he can deal with her distractions. After he’s done, he catches up to Catwoman at the lighthouse of Blackgate and confronts her.

While Batman interrogates Catwoman, a DOJ task force led by Captain Rick Flag shows up, claiming they have the prison under control. Unbeknownst to Batman, the DOJ was Catwoman’s anonymous employer, wanting Bane, Deadshot and Bronze Tiger to be a part of Task Force X. To not arouse suspicion they left Bane, but secretly took Deadshot and Bronze Tiger.

When the DOJ made their way through Blackgate they found Black Mask, who resisted arrest. In a shootout a pipe got hit, causing hot steam to be directed towards Black Mask, which could have caused his mask to melt to his face. The Joker killed an agent and took his uniform, attempting to escape. Penguin fled the Prison after one of his men released him and supplied him with one of his trick-umbrellas.

Batman: Arkham Shadow

Between Arkham Shadow and Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum

After the events of The Road to Arkham, Batman takes Joker to Arkham Asylum and escorts him to the holding cells in Intensive Treatment after suspecting that something is not right. Suddenly, Joker breaks free and now has full control of the asylum.

Having stopped Victor Zsasz from electrocuting an Arkham guard to death, finding out Harley Quinn has captured Quincy Sharp and having stopped the first TITAN henchman, Batman watches James Gordon get captured by Frank Boles, who was on Joker's payroll. Batman manages to get out of Intensive Treatment and immediately heads to Arkham North, tracking down James Gordon all the way to the Medical Facility.

After rescuing the doctors from Joker's henchmen and having encountered Scarecrow, Batman finds where Gordon is and rescues him from Harley Quinn, but fights Bane right after and runs him down to the water with the Batmobile, letting Gordon get to safety on a boat that is leaving Arkham Island.

Batman goes to Dead Man's Point and to his Batcave, where he researches Dr. Young's files on TITAN after Bane mentioned her in their fight. Batman heads to Arkham Mansion to retrieve the missing TITAN formula and after another encounter with Scarecrow, rescues Dr. Young from Zsasz's grasp, only for her to die right after from an explosive Joker planted in Sharp's hidden vault.

Batman heads to the Penitentiary, where he rescues Quincy Sharp, Joker lets out all of the lunatics loose, rescues two Arkham guards from Harley Quinn and later locks her up, accidentally telling Batman that the Joker has a secret stash in the Botanical Gardens. Heading there, Batman finds the secret stash and also finds out that the Joker has perfected the TITAN formula and is already shipping it to various villains, to which he shoots his own henchmen with the TITAN and transforms them to stall Batman. He stops the TITAN henchmen and destroys the containers in the gardens, but the TITAN is still out there, so he talks to Poison Ivy and she tells her that there's a plant growing inside Killer Croc's lair that can counter the effects of TITAN.

Poison Ivy later talks to Joker how Batman hurt her plants, so Joker injects her with the TITAN and causes her plants to invade all of Arkham Asylum. Batman heads to Intensive Treatment once again to get access to Killer Croc's lair, but has another encounter with Scarecrow, and after the encounter, he goes into Killer Croc's lair, where Scarecrow is mauled by him and takes Scarecrow with him.

After Batman gets enough TITAN antidote from Poison Ivy's spores, he goes back to his Batcave, but while he was making the antidote, Ivy's plans destroy the Batcave and Batman just barely manages to make it. Going through the caves, he finds out that Joker is pumping the TITAN into the Gotham water supply and stops it before it gets any worse. Going back to the Botanical Gardens, Batman fights Poison Ivy and the gardens collapse, so Batman makes a quick escape.

Having escaped the Botanical Gardens, Batman goes to the big party at the Visitor Center, where Joker was waiting for him and after he defeats the two TITAN henchmen, Joker reveals that he captured Gordon and shoots him, but before it could reach him, Batman takes the needle and resists the TITAN transformation, but Joker seeing this, he shoots himself with TITAN in the neck and transforms himself into TITAN Joker. Batman defeats Joker with Explosive Gel and rescues Gordon, immediately going after Two-Face after he hears in the police radio that he's robbing the Second National Bank and is fleeing in a police car from two officers he killed.

Between Arkham Asylum and City

After a boat carrying Harley and the now-sick Joker was speeding off towards Gotham, Batman joined in as he placed a secret alarm that alerted him of the Joker's escape, chasing them down in the Batboat. After they ignored his orders to stop, Batman opened fire and eventually landed a missile on the boat, destroying it to pieces. Batman failed to find them, not realizing they swam all the way to Arkham City.

Batman: Arkham City

During a press conference criticizing the lack of safety in Arkham City, Bruce Wayne is apprehended and is taken into custody by Hugo Strange, where he reveals that he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman, and that a so-called Protocol 10 will be his legacy, and if he tries to stop him, he will reveal his identity. Bruce breaks free from the chair but is spotted by a TYGER guard behind the mirror, which he takes down but is subdued by another guard and takes him to the processing center, where he has a brief encounter with Jack Ryder and saves him, but is taken down by a thug with a metal pipe and the Penguin.

The Penguin's henchmen take Bruce Wayne to him, where he has a talk with him before getting some "good old-fashioned revenge", which is quickly countered by Bruce as he breaks Oswald's hand. He breaks free from the cuffs and takes down his henchmen, to where he goes to the rooftop to communicate with Alfred to drop his suit and has a chat with him, telling him about Hugo Strange, how he knows his identity and how he has to stop Protocol 10. The Batwing drops the batsuit and he suits up, and hacks into the TYGER communication with the encryption key he had taken previously.

Batman heads to the courthouse after hearing that Catwoman was apprehended by Two-Face and with the intention to kill her, and interrupts the trial, but is shot in the chest. After taking down Two-Face, Batman asks Catwoman what Protocol 10 is, but she has no idea what that is, so he asks what she knows about Strange, but after seeing a laser being pointed to Catwoman, he pulls her towards a wall and immediately suspects it was the Joker, so he scans the crime scene, concluding that it came from the top of the church.

After he enters the church, Batman is surrounded by Joker's henchmen and Harley Quinn, which says that Joker's not open for visits before leaving, and Batman throws a smoke bomb to disappear for the thugs, he takes them down, rescuing the guards and doctors and heads towards the bell tower, where he finds the gun that was fired earlier, which appeared to be controlled remotely by Joker. After he scans the gun, Joker appears on the televisions and asks how long it has been, saying he left him to die, but is quickly changed by him activating the bombs, making Batman glide out of the window.

Batman tracks down Joker's signal to the steel mill and finds his way into the chimney, Harley Quinn is surprised upon seeing that he didn't get blown up back in the church and blocks his way to Joker. Batman rescues a doctor they kidnapped and tortured and she explains how the Joker is sick from TITAN poisoning since the incident on Arkham Island, to which Harley Quinn intervenes by saying that is confidential information and sends a group of henchmen on their way, Batman makes the Remote Electrical Charge out of scraps and stops the henchmen. Batman uses the Remote Electrical Charge to find a way into the manager's office, where Joker is, and has an encounter with one of the Abramovici twins, Mr. Hammer, he stops him and quickly heads to the manager's office, finding Joker apparently dead and Harley crying, but is drugged by a now-healthy Joker, and is taken down by Harley Quinn.

He wakes up strapped to a wheelchair and finds out that Joker is still sick, and that the "dead" Joker was a fake. Joker reveals that he has infected Batman with his own blood, but then also reveals that he has sent it to Gotham's hospitals, now forcing Batman to find a cure for him, the Joker and all of Gotham, and after Batman assumes that is Protocol 10, Joker gasps and says he has never heard of it, throwing Batman - who is still attached to the wheelchair - out of a window, he gets a phone call from Joker from a phone that he strapped to his chest, and he reveals that Mr. Freeze was working on a cure, before going dark on him. Batman hangs up forcibly, tells Alfred everything that happened and heads towards the coldest point in Arkham City.

Batman goes to the old GCPD building, where he finds Joker's henchmen outside and takes them down, he also hacks his way into Penguin's communications and takes down his henchmen inside the building, interrogating the last one about where Mr. Freeze is, the henchman responds that he's inside the museum where Penguin has him. Cobblepot, hearing this, locks Batman inside the GCPD and bombs the bridges between Amusement Mile and Park Row, effectively trapping some of his own henchmen and Joker's crew.

Batman heads to the museum and tries to get in, but is unsuccessful as Penguin's crew has placed three jammers that prevent him from hacking the museum entrance, so he tracks them down and destroys them, getting into the museum. He rescues an undercover cop, and now has to rescue the rest of the cops which Gordon sent him with. Batman heads to the Gladiator Pit and finds one of the cops, whom is killed by Penguin right after and the second one is being held by the other Abramovici Twin, Mr. Sickle. Batman fights all the thugs in the Gladiator Pit, including a TITAN henchman. Batman talks to Alfred that he found Penguin but the situation got worse and he now has a supply of the TITAN formula, Oracle intervenes hearing this and warns Batman that his biometric readings are spiking, he tells Alfred to bring her up to speed and logs off. Batman heads to rescue the other cops and finds Mr. Freeze without his suit, which he interrogates about how to stop Penguin, who has access to Freeze's gun. He finds Freeze's suit and makes the Disruptor to jam his gun. Batman goes to the Iceberg Lounge and knocks down Penguin, who blows up the iceberg Batman is standing in and reveals Solomon Grundy, whom Batman takes down and eventually also takes down Penguin, bringing him to Victor. Batman asks Freeze about the cure, but he says that it will take too long and he will die before it is finished, but Batman brings up Ra's Al Ghul, which seemed to trigger a captured Ninja in the museum, who escapes by smashing through the display window.

Batman tracks down the Ninja, finding out that it is from Talia's Elite Guard. After putting a tracker on her and being apprehended, he is rescued by Robin who delivers him the Line Launcher. Batman once again follows the Ninja down to the sewers and the subway, and eventually into Wonder City. On his way, he also finds out that Strange is supplying Joker with weapons, which he assumes is that Strange is trying to control who runs the streets. He follows the assassin's trail and finds a hidden entrance in Wonder City, which leads him to Talia Al Ghul. She tries to seduce him, but is shocked when she removes his cowl and sees his sick face, to which she asks if he wishes to become an assassin, and Batman says he's got no other choice. Batman then proceeds to do the Demon Trials, and completes them successfully, his final challenge is now to kill Ra's Al Ghul, which he refuses to, and Talia is surprised by how he lied, but Batman just assured her that he needed a sample of Ra's blood. Batman fights Ra's Al Ghul and the latter holds Talia hostage with a dagger, making Batman use the Reverse Batarang, knocking him down and extracting his blood.

Batman exits through the subway, and hears Strange's announcement that Sharp has been imprisoned in Arkham City, to which he rescues and interrogates him about Strange, he finds out that Sharp had been met by Strange back in Arkham Asylum, and told him that he had powerful friends that funded everything and in change of him funding the campaign, Sharp ignored Strange's experiments. After Batman finishes interrogating Sharp, Oracle warns him that his health is not good and that he needs to urgently deliver the cure to Freeze.

Batman goes to the old GCPD building once again, where he reunites with Freeze to give him Ra's blood. Freeze finishes the cure in seconds and makes two of them, but destroys one of them in front of Batman, he wants the cure in exchange of Nora, but Batman ignores him and they start to fight. Batman wins and subdues Freeze, but after opening the vault which Freeze had locked the cure in, he discovers the cure has been stolen by Harley Quinn. To help Batman on his way to Joker, Victor gives him the Freeze Blast.

Batman makes his way to the Steel Mill a second time, taking down Joker's henchmen outside and inside the Steel Mill, he reaches the Funhouse, where he fights a now healthy Joker alongside his henchmen, and after almost taking him down, Batman is trapped in the rubble. Talia walks in on both of them and offers Joker immortality, to which Batman tells her to stop, and makes Joker believe that it is real.

Catwoman finds Batman trapped in the rubble and helps him out, recalling their earlier encounter in the courthouse, Batman now finds out what Protocol 10 is, but his first objective is Talia before being talked out of it by Alfred and he is convinced to focus on Protocol 10 instead. He finds the Master Control Program in one of the helicopters and finds his way in to the Processing Center, and then Wonder Tower. Batman makes his way to the top and after taking down the guards in Strange's office, he kicks him and deactivates Protocol 10 with the help of Oracle. Strange says how he's gonna command forces beyond Batman's comprehension, but is suddenly stabbed by Ra's Al Ghul, who now views him as a failure of his plan. Strange activates Protocol 11 before succumbing to his wounds, and blows up the top of the tower. While falling from all the way to the top, Ra's kills himself with his own sword in an attempt to also kill Batman.

Batman lands in front of the processing center, and talks to Oracle before being interrupted by Joker, who now has Talia hostage and forces Batman to go rescue her outside the Monarch Theater. He takes down the snipers and heads inside, but as Batman begins to talk with Joker, Talia stabs and kills Joker, having taken the cure. Batman, seeing Joker's corpse, begins to remember everything that has happened earlier tonight, but as he pieces everything together, he warns Talia, but it is too late, as she is shot in the back by the real, sick Joker. It is then revealed that the healthy Joker was Clayface all along, and Batman fights him all the way down to the Lazarus Pit that was right below the theater.

Batman defeats Clayface and retrieves the cure, drinking half of it. He then throws Talia's sword to a generator that causes an explosion that knocks him out. After he regains consciousness, he begins to talk to Joker that "every decision he's ever made ends in death and misery, and that he'll just break out and do it again". Joker then catches Batman off-guard by stabbing him on the shoulder, making him drop the cure, Joker tries to desperately get the cure, but fails. After Joker asks Batman if he's happy now, he then asks him if he wanna knows something funny, then says that "even after everything's he's done, he would've saved him". Joker then breaks into laughter, and says that's actually funny before having his last laugh and dying on the ground. Batman then carries Joker's actual corpse outside the Monarch Theater, shocking his gang and Harley Quinn, and takes him all the way on the hood of a police car, Gordon asks Batman what happened, but he is unresponsive as he walks off Arkham City.

Between Arkham City and Knight

Weeks after the events of Arkham City, Batman enters the place again after hearing that Harley Quinn has captured three cops. He rescues the first one in the Loading Bay of the Steel Mill, and tracks down the other cops with a radio that was left behind. He interrogates one of Harley's thugs to find a way in, the thug answers that three of Harley's henchmen have the code, and Batman will have to track them down and interrogate them. After Batman successfully gets the code from the thugs, he infiltrates his way in and heads to rescue the second cop, taking down the thugs surrounding him, but after he unties him, Harley shoots the cop, but Batman takes the bullet and is knocked out by Harley, having his belt removed and taken hostage.

Two days later, Robin breaks his way in to rescue him and takes down Harley Quinn to get the key to the security panel for the cage holding Batman, freeing him and giving him his belt. Robin heads to rescue the other cops and Batman deactivates the bombs that Harley has planted all over the place. Batman returns to the Joker monument and finds Harley Quinn standing on the monument's hands, activating the robots that were originally in Wonder City, Batman takes down the robots and gets a hold of Harley, but the bombs can't be deactivated and the place goes up in flames.

Batman and Harley manage to escape in time. Batman thinks Robin is dead from the explosion and angrily asks Harley what she has done, she says that "now he knows how it feels". Harley takes out a dagger and tries to catch Batman off-guard, but is taken down by Robin, who also managed to get out in time of the explosion. Batman asks Robin about the cops, and after knowing they're fine, he leaves.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

In Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009) Batman wears a gray fabric body suit with a unique bat symbol while the cowl, cape, trunks, boots and gauntlets are black with a slight, dark blue tint. The utility belt is yellow and has eight small pouches. At some points near the seams there are small silver circles, likely some sort of screws or bolts. Inside the cowl are white lenses for detective mode that highlight armed enemies in red, and points of interest in orange. If Batman needs to track something or someone, he can switch between tracking modes for different substances. The cowl also stores communications and shows Bruce's facial expressions. The cape expands into a big, round shape when Batman glides. Ultra strong micro plating developed by WayneTech is layered between the regular armor and the undersuit. Additionally the super lightweight nano-engineered polymer plating incorporated into the Batsuit creates a more resilient outer shell. The chest piece is reinforced by military grade spun para-armid fiber molded into it. On top of all that the Batsuit is soaked in a top secret prototype formula developed by Lucius Fox at WayneTech, which increases durability without sacrificing flexibility or additional weight.

Batman: Arkham City

The suit Batman wears in Batman: Arkham City (2011) is very similar to the one he wears in the previous game; Batman: Arkham Asylum. It features the same gray body suit and the only difference between the black cowl and trunks of this suit and it's predecessor is that this time the blue tint is now a much lighter blue. The cape, that has the same blue tint as the cowl, is smaller and less rounded than the cape on the Arkham Asylum suit. The detective mode in this suit displays armed enemies in orange, and if Batman wants to track someone or something he doesn't have to switch between different tracking modes anymore. The utility belt is a slightly darker tone of yellow and features nine pouches, all of them bigger than the ones on the previous belt. The bat symbol on the chest is now a different, bigger symbol, the same one that Batman uses in his computer system, vehicles and gadgets. The boots and gauntlets are bulkier than they were before, the right gauntlet features a small touch screen while the left one can hold at least one SIM card. Additionally this suit features armor plating under the fabric, which becomes visible when the suit gets damaged.

Batman: Arkham Origins

Batman: Arkham Origins (2013) features a tactical, mostly grey version of the Batsuit, being more militarized and armored. This symbolizes how Batman is still in his first years at this point of the timeline and requires more padding on the suit. It features a bat symbol cape similar to Batman: Arkham Asylum's suit, gauntlets that can display holograms, a cowl with similar detective functionality to Batman: Arkham City, but with the ability to rebuild and play crime scenes, and a belt that is composed of seven pouches and three capsules. Later in the game, he integrates Electrocutioner's shock gloves into his suit and uses it for combat, power energy and resuscitate Alfred and Bane.

The game also features a darker version of this suit combined with a bronze belt that is a reward for completing the Dark Knight system.

Extreme Environment Suit
The Extreme Environment (XE) Suit as seen in Cold, Cold Heart.

Also known as just the XE Suit for short, it is featured in the additional story pack Cold, Cold Heart, where it is used to stop Mr. Freeze and break ice obstacles. This suit features the thermal gloves, which have a similar function to the shock gloves, but with the change that it can now easily break ice and free frozen civilians safely, when the thermal gloves are activated, there will be orange lights emitting from the suit and vapor surrounding it, indicating that it is heating up.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Batsuit v7.43

Also known as the Post Arkham City suit[9], it is a more tactical version of the suit seen in Batman: Arkham City, its most notable features are a bat symbol that moves in three pieces, a gauntlet that can display monochrome hologram calls, a cowl with the same detective functionality as Batman: Arkham City.

Batsuit v8.03

It is the main suit for Batman: Arkham Knight (2015) that is used throughout the rest of the main story and side missions. It features a tri-weave bodysuit, with titanium-dipped mesh over a layer of MR fluid-based liquid body armor that is designed to withstand up to 6gs of acceleration to increase navigational capability, a responsive shock absorption, which is WayneTech Smart MR-fluid that hardens in response to impact and creates an opportunity for more effective counter-attacks to melee assailants, liquid body armor layer, which has increased flexibility over fiber or ceramic-based alternatives, allowing for multiple unaware targets to be neutralized in quick succession, it is also compatible with the Batmobile's interface, creating a symbiotic integration between it and the Batsuit's subsystems that allows for use of the electromagnetic ejection mechanism, and it can take the Gs from the Grapnel Boost MKII upgrade.

This suit also has two variants that are earned after completing two goals. The first is the Batsuit v8.04 and is earned by completing the main story, it is a pristine version of the main suit that will not get damaged at all. The second is the Batsuit v8.05 and is earned by completing 240% of the game, its only change from the previous two is the fact that it has a golden bat symbol.
