Batman: Arkham Shadow
More actions
Batman: Arkham Shadow is a virtual reality video game in the Batman: Arkham series, developed by Camouflaj and Oculus Studios in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC.[8] It was released in October 2024 exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.[2] Set between the events of Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum, it follows a relatively young Batman as he tries to stop the Rat King and his cult from carrying out a "Day of Wrath" against Gotham City.[8][9][7]
Plot
On the Fourth of July, Gotham City came under attack from the mysterious Rat King and his cult, the Rats, who were preparing for a "Day of Wrath".[7][1] Meta described the Rat King as the most difficult challenge Batman had faced at that point in his career.[8]
To uncover the Rat King's identity, Bruce Wayne went undercover as the criminal "Matches" Malone at Blackgate Prison, where most of the story takes place.[5] In Blackgate, Malone befriended Joe, an inmate who ran the prison commissary.[5] Meanwhile, District Attorney Harvey Dent, Bruce's foster brother, was hunting the Rat King as well. His investigation led him to discover who Joe really was, and before the story's point of no return he left Bruce a voice message saying he had found something important.[5] During Malone's trial, Dr. Jonathan Crane tried to dose Malone with a chemical. Malone fended off the attack, and the chemical splashed onto Dent, disfiguring him.[10][11]
The Rat King was revealed to be Dent himself.[12] On a ship heading to Gotham City, Dent tried to kill Joe, who was Joe Chill, the man who murdered Bruce's parents. Bruce forgave Chill and let him escape from Dent.[13][5] Batman confronted Dent without throwing a punch and showed him sympathy.[5] Payton described the story as one of two brothers facing their shadows: Bruce conquered his and spared Chill, while Dent fell to his and was shaped into Two-Face.[12]
Afterward, Bruce visited Dent in the hospital.[13] Over the credits, Bruce asked Leslie Thompkins to reach out to a member of the Rats who had been in a projector room.[5]
Gameplay
Batman: Arkham Shadow is played from Batman's point of view in virtual reality. It combines the exploration, stealth and freeform combat of the Batman: Arkham series.[7][2] For part of the campaign the player controls Bruce Wayne disguised as "Matches" Malone. Game director Ryan Payton estimated that the average player spends about 70% of the game as Batman and 30% as Malone.[5]

Exploration
The player uses the Grapnel Gun to reach the rooftops of Gotham City and glides with Batman's cape.[7] The level design takes particular inspiration from the interconnected structure of Batman: Arkham Asylum.[9] Players who explore off the main path can find secrets such as overlooked vents and hidden puzzles, as well as collectibles.[8][7] While playing as Malone, the player can talk to inmates and other characters, whose dialogue changes as the campaign progresses.[5]

Main story
The campaign counts down the days to the Rat King's Day of Wrath. After a prologue in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne spent each day in Blackgate as "Matches" Malone and each night as Batman, returning to Malone's cell to end the day or night.[17][18]
- Prologue: Batman searched the Bowery sewers for the Rats' hostages and secured the Jezebel Guns store. He then met Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Dent at the GCPD task force office, and went on to the Monarch Theatre and the courthouse. The prologue ended with Malone's arrival at Blackgate.[19][17]
- Day 1 and Night 1: Malone found a way into the Yard and eavesdropped on Falcone and Captain Lyle Bolton, but was caught and ended up in the infirmary. That night, Batman broke into Maximum Security and received the Explosive Gel from the Batwing. He then defeated Carmine Falcone, who named Otis Flannagan as the Rat King.[18][17]
- Day 2 and Night 2: Malone searched for Flannagan and attended a group therapy session with Dr. Harleen Quinzel. He also ran an errand for Joe in exchange for the Death Row access code. That night, Batman entered Death Row and received the Shock Gloves. He investigated the attack on Falcone in the chapel, where he interrogated the Ratcatcher, and then broke into Bolton's office in Administration.[20][17]
- Day 3 and solitary confinement: Malone fought and defeated Bolton in the Cage, but was then knocked out and placed in solitary confinement for the following days.[20][17]
- Night 3: With Joe's help, Malone slipped into Garden Control. That night, Batman made his way through the Gardens and the Arkham Ward, received the Batclaw and rescued Dr. Quinzel. He then investigated Dr. Crane's office. In Crane's hidden lab, he was drawn into a nightmare and fought a shadowy version of Batman.[21][17]
- The Day of Wrath: After being interrogated by Gordon and Dent, Malone enlisted Falcone's help to reach Flannagan in solitary. He then stood trial. Afterward, Malone was locked in a gas chamber but was freed by the Rats, who believed him to be the Rat King. As Batman, Bruce followed a hidden tunnel to the Rat King's ship, the Ark, defused the bombs on board and confronted Dent.[22][17]
Side missions
Optional content includes a series of collectibles and destructible objects: Rat King Idols, Rat Radios, Rat Bombs, Rat Maps, Echoes of the Past, Ancient Runes and Patient Tapes.[23][24] There are 40 Rat King Idols hidden throughout the game.[25][17] Update v1.4 added six more Echo collectibles.[26]
While Malone is in solitary confinement, the player can knock on the cell wall to talk with the Joker, Black Mask and Firefly. Payton confirmed that these conversations are completely optional.[5]
Downloadable content
Batman: Arkham Shadow did not receive story downloadable content. Instead, Camouflaj released a series of free updates.[5][12] According to Payton, some of the added content had been planned before launch but was not finished in time.[12]
- v1.1 (November 2024) included more than 1,300 optimizations, bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. It also added new Game Over sequences, phone numbers to scan and voice messages in the Batcave, playback of Echo voiceovers from the Database, and more points of interest for Detective Vision.[16]
- v1.2 (December 2024) added localized voice-over in French, Italian, German, Latin American Spanish, European Spanish, Korean and Japanese. It also added more Challenge Maps and brought back the Character Viewer.[16]
- v1.3 was announced for early 2025, with a New Game+ mode, new Predator Challenge Maps, a new post-credits scene and some mixed-reality-enhanced content.[16]
- v1.4, the "Game of the Year Update", was released on February 27, 2025.[26] It added:
- three Predator Maps based on earlier games: "Quiet Reflection" (after "Quiet Waters" from Arkham Origins), "Architect of Fear" (after "Natural Selection" from Arkham City) and "Stalking TYGER" (after "Silent Knight" from Arkham Asylum)
- an Extreme Difficulty setting
- "Crane's Nightmare", an Infinite Combat challenge inspired by the Scarecrow Nightmare sequences of Arkham Asylum
- I Am the Knight Mode, a New Game+ variant on Extreme Difficulty that restarts the campaign after a Game Over; completing it unlocks the gold-accented Prestige variant of the Batsuit and gadgets
- six new Echo collectibles and more than 500 bug fixes[26]
Development
Production
In a launch-day letter, Payton, Camouflaj's founder and studio head, wrote that the project began in 2020. That year he received a call suggesting Camouflaj would be the right team to approach Warner Bros. Interactive about a new Arkham game.[4] The game was built in collaboration with:
- Warner Bros. Interactive and DC
- internal sister studios Armature, Big Box VR, Downpour Interactive, Ready At Dawn and Sanzaru
- external teams Bossa, Coatsink, Endeavor One and Polyarc[4]
Payton said the game was made in Unity and is not open-world. He described Arkham Asylum as the team's "North Star".[3] He explained that the team modeled the game's structure on Asylum because Rocksteady had begun with a smaller, tighter game, which suited Camouflaj's first Arkham title.[5] After release, the whole Camouflaj team stayed on the game at least through the end of 2024 to support it with free updates.[4]
Writing
Payton said the team decided early on to create a new villain, the Rat King. This let them write a mysterious antagonist without the baggage of an existing member of Batman's rogues gallery. Only after settling on the Rat King did they decide who would be under the mask, eventually choosing Harvey Dent.[12] Payton sees Two-Face as the whole character, with Harvey Dent and the Rat King as its opposing personalities.[12]
According to Payton, the team wanted to explore the theme of identity. The title refers to "one's shadow from a Jungian perspective". It was Warner Bros. and DC who suggested using "Matches" Malone, and the persona became one of the game's core elements. Payton called the Malone persona "the vehicle" for Bruce to become the kind of person he looks down on and to come out "wiser and stronger".[5]
CUT CONTENT
Payton said that for "at least a year and a half if not two years" of development, Joe was going to be called "Frost", a nickname from the inmates that played on the name Chill. The team eventually decided to keep the name Joe, choosing to "trust and respect the player".[5] The team also had "talks, prototypes, and playables" of several versions of a Harvey Dent boss fight. None made it into the final game, partly because of scope, and partly because Payton felt it mattered more that Batman does not throw a punch at the end of the story.[5]
Design
Payton said Metal Gear Solid 2 was an inspiration for swapping the player character. None of the marketing materials said players would play as Malone, and character models were swapped in trailers to protect the surprise. Unlike Metal Gear Solid 2, though, the team wanted players to spend most of their time as Batman.[5] Payton described Malone's disguise as a "Mission Impossible-inspired mask that has some tech in it".[5] Joe Chill's character model is an aged-up version of his model from Batman: Arkham VR.[5]
According to Payton, the Challenge Maps were "really on the bubble" a few months before launch. The team made the extra effort to ship them after fans made clear how much they wanted the mode.[14]
Voice cast
- Roger Craig Smith as Batman, Bruce Wayne and Matches Malone, reprising his role from Arkham Origins[3][15]
- Troy Baker as Harvey Dent, the Rat King, Two-Face and the Joker[15]
- Tara Strong as Dr. Harleen Quinzel[8]
- Mark Rolston as James Gordon[8]
- Khary Payton as Otis Flannagan[8]
- Earl Baylon as Lyle Bolton[8]
- Chelsea Kane as Barbara Gordon[8]
- Martin Jarvis as Alfred Pennyworth[8]
- Elijah Wood as Dr. Jonathan Crane[8]
- Armin Shimerman as Joe Chill[5]
Music
The score was composed by Kazuma Jinnouchi, with Nobuko Toda as score producer and orchestrator.[6] It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Jinnouchi said he drew on the soundtracks of both Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum. The rhythmic string figure in "Arkham Shadow Main Theme" is inspired by Origins, and the melodic shape of "The Bat-Signal" is inspired by Asylum.[13]
For several key conversations, Jinnouchi held back the music until the player was immersed in the dialogue, so that the music "follows the player emotionally". The ending track, "The Other Side", was one of the first pieces he wrote for the game. He shelved it after mixed early feedback, then later found that it fit the scene in which Bruce visits Dent in the hospital.[13] The official soundtrack album was released on February 27, 2025, alongside update v1.4.[26]
Release
Batman: Arkham Shadow was teased on May 1, 2024, and officially revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 7, 2024.[27][7] Before release, Meta's story description said that public officials, including Commissioner Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, had been abducted, and that the Rats had pledged to execute them within a week.[7] The story trailer used an instrumental cover of "Bullet with Butterfly Wings".[28] The first gameplay trailer premiered at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, 2024, and the release window was narrowed to October.[9]
At Meta Connect on September 25, 2024, Meta announced a release date of October 22, 2024 and a price of $49.99 USD.[2] Camouflaj's launch letter is dated October 22, 2024.[4] However, Meta's "Out Now" announcement was published on October 21, 2024, and the Meta Horizon Store gives the release date as October 21, 2024.[8][1] Meta also took an in-person demo of the game on tour.[8]
Platforms
The game is exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.[8] The store listing supports sitting, standing and roomscale play with controllers and does not require an internet connection.[1] It is rated Teen by the ESRB for violence, mild blood and language.[8] Supported languages are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican Spanish and European Spanish.[1]
Editions
A copy of the game, plus three months of Meta Quest+, came with any new 512GB Meta Quest 3 or 128GB or 256GB Meta Quest 3S. The offer covered headsets purchased and activated between September 25, 2024 and 5:00 pm PT on April 30, 2025.[2]
Reception
On Metacritic, Batman: Arkham Shadow holds a score of 85 based on 50 critic reviews, which the site classifies as "generally favorable".[29] Henry Stockdale of UploadVR called it "a brilliant return for the Dark Knight". He said it took him roughly 12 hours to finish without completing all the side content, roughly the same as Arkham Asylum.[30]
The game won:
- Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards 2024, against Arizona Sunshine Remake, Asgard's Wrath 2, Metal: Hellsinger VR and Metro Awakening[16]
- Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 28th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards[31]
It was longlisted for the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards in three categories:
- Technical Achievement
- Performer in a Leading Role (Roger Craig Smith)
- Performer in a Supporting Role (Troy Baker)[15]
Continuity
The game is described as an official entry in the Batman: Arkham franchise, set between the events of Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum.[7][3] It depicts a relatively young Bruce Wayne.[9] It also shows Dr. Harleen Quinzel and Dr. Jonathan Crane before they became Harley Quinn and the Scarecrow.[1]
Behind the scenes
In November 2024, Payton said Camouflaj would welcome the chance to make a sequel.[12] In January 2026, UploadVR reported the following:
- The Commissioner Gordon voice actor had said in 2025 that a sequel was about to enter development.
- Meta had cancelled the sequel, which was being developed at Sanzaru Games and ended when that studio closed.
- Camouflaj had had significant layoffs and would no longer develop VR games.[32]
Trivia
- Unlike most earlier Arkham games, Batman: Arkham Shadow has no Riddler trophies or challenges. Rat King Idols take the place of the trophies, alongside other Rat King collectibles such as radios, bombs and maps.[23][33]
- By February 2025, more than one million players had unlocked the game's first achievement, "False God", which is earned by finding a Rat King Idol.[34][25] The achievement is typically unlocked within the first five to ten minutes of play.[34]
