Usage
This template formats citations to videos such as trailers, developer diaries, convention panels, interviews, promotional videos, and official uploads.
<ref>{{Cite video
| creator = Rocksteady Studios
| title = Batman: Arkham Knight Developer Diary
| platform = YouTube
| channel = Batman Arkham
| date = June 2015
| url = https://youtube.com/example
| timestamp = 4:32
| access-date = September 20, 2026
}}</ref>
Parameters
- creator
- The person, studio, publisher, or organization responsible for the video.
- title
- The title of the video.
- platform
- The hosting platform, such as YouTube.
- channel
- The channel or account that uploaded the video.
- date
- The publication or upload date.
- url
- The original video URL.
- timestamp
- The timestamp where the relevant information appears.
- archive-url
- An archived copy or preserved version, when available.
- access-date
- The date the video was accessed.
Timestamps
When citing a specific statement, scene, or piece of information, include a timestamp whenever possible.
Example:
<ref>{{Cite video
| creator = Example Developer
| title = Arkham Developer Panel
| platform = YouTube
| date = 2014
| url = https://youtube.com/example
| timestamp = 18:42
}}</ref>
This is much more useful than citing an hour-long video without identifying where the information appears.
Official uploads
Official trailers, developer diaries, promotional footage, and convention recordings may be useful sources.
Whenever possible, cite the original upload from:
- The developer
- The publisher
- An official game account
- The convention organizer
- The original publication
Avoid citing reuploads when the original is available.
Interviews
If the video is primarily an interview, Template:Cite interview may be more appropriate.
Use Cite video when the video itself is the important source, such as:
- Developer diaries
- Trailers
- Panels
- Presentations
- Gameplay demonstrations
- Behind-the-scenes features
Trailers and promotional footage
Trailers should be treated carefully when making continuity claims.
A trailer may include:
- Early footage
- Edited dialogue
- Alternate scenes
- Placeholder assets
- Material changed before release
Do not automatically treat every element of promotional footage as an event that occurred in continuity.
Archived or deleted videos
If the original video has been removed but a reliable archived copy exists, preserve the original URL when known and include the archive URL.
Example:
<ref>{{Cite video
| title = Original developer video
| platform = YouTube
| date = 2013
| url = https://youtube.com/original-url
| archive-url = https://example.com/archive
| timestamp = 6:15
}}</ref>
